Avove signs the Race at Work Charter

We are proud to announce we have signed the Race at Work Charter during Race Equality Week (6-12 February 2023), which is an annual UK-wide movement uniting thousands of organisations and individuals to address the barriers to race equality in the workplace.

The Race at Work Charter asks businesses to make a public commitment to improving equality of opportunity in the workplace. Signing the Charter means taking practical steps to ensure workplaces are tackling barriers that Black, Asian, Mixed Raced and other ethnically diverse people face in recruitment and progression and that their organisations are representative of British society today.

We have joined more than 900 employers by signing up to the Race at Work Charter which builds on the work of the 2017 McGregor-Smith Review that found people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds were still under-employed, under-promoted and under-represented at senior levels.

The Race at Work Charteris a public commitment to improving the experiences of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic employees in the workplace. It sets out seven actions for signatories like Avove to take to improve race equality:

  • Appointing an Executive Sponsor for race
  • Capturing data and publicising progress
  • Commitment from board level to ensure zero tolerance of harassment and bullying
  • Making equality in the workplace the responsibility of all leaders and managers
  • Taking action that supports ethnic minority career proression
  • Include ethnically diverse-led businesses in our supply chains
  • Support race inclusion allies in the workplace

I am proud to be the Executive Sponsor for race at Avove. Having a diverse workforce is vital to our industry’s success, and as a growing business, we can help plug the skills gap by attracting and retaining more people from under-represented groups into the utilities sector.

We want every one of our colleagues to feel a sense of belonging and inclusiveness. Signing up to the Charter is not only a public sign of our commitment, but more importantly, it’s a clear signal to all our colleagues that we’re serious about driving racial equality.
