Avove and Severn Trent Accelerate Restoration of War Memorial for VE Day
Restoration of Strelley war memorial accelerated by donation from Avove and Severn Trent
As a proud Armed Forces employer who is committed to making a difference within the local community, we are delighted to share that we have teamed up with our client, Severn Trent, to provide essential funding to accelerate the restoration of a cherished war memorial located in the heart of Strelley.

Restoring a beloved memorial in the heart of the local community
Our project team working with our client, Severn Trent, is currently working to enhance the water supply with our Strelley to Redhill project, which involves the installation of a 16km pipeline. Whilst working in the local area, a community project was brought to the attention of both Avove and Severn Trent to support the restoration of a local war memorial.
After being contacted by the Parochial Church Council of the Ecclesiastical Parish, both Avove and Severn Trent were made aware of the deteriorating state of the memorial – a deeply significant symbol of remembrance and local history. Over the last two years, the Church Council, has led an inspiring community fundraising effort to improve its state, organising local events and collecting donations that have amounted to an impressive £3000.
However, a recent stonemasonry assessment revealed its condition was more fragile than initially expected, sparking urgent calls for restoration. Avove and our client, Severn Trent, stepped in to contribute an additional £3000 to facilitate a quicker restoration time. This successfully accelerated the memorial’s restoration.

Honouring local heroes on VE day
This project was brought to our attention by Chairman of the Strelley Village Group, Martin Milmoe, who commented:
The village war memorial honours those who came before us and serves as an important place of reflection and community memory. It’s fragile state has been of great concern to the community, and we have been actively stepping up our efforts to generate much-needed funding to restore it and ensure its long term stability.”
“Avove and Severn Trent’s generosity has been essential to these plans, and with VE Day approaching, the timing of the contribution is even more significant, as it will provide the community with a place to pay their respects.
In addition, Treasurer of the Strelley Church Parish Council, Mike Walters added:
The memorial’s restoration has been a priority of ours, and with professional assessments highlighting the urgent need for works, this donation couldn’t be more timely. The cheque was presented to members of our church council by representatives of both businesses, and it will be invested immediately, so as to avoid any worsening of its condition.
Speaking about the success and significance of this initiative, Nicholas Broughton, Senior Project Manager at Avove working on the Strelley to Redhill project, said:
Strelley is a wonderful community, and so preserving its history should always be of the utmost importance. Therefore, it was an honour to be joined by Neil Russell, Senior Project Manager at Severn Trent, to hand over the cheque in person and reiterate our support for the community. Supporting community initiatives is something that both businesses are extremely passionate about and it’s great to know that the people of Strelley will benefit from the contribution made.
