What is International Women in Engineering Day?

International Women in Engineering Day, launched by Women’s Engineering Society (WES) celebrates its 12th year in 2025. This year’s theme is #TogetherWeEngineer.

INWED gives women engineers around the world a profile when they are still hugely under-represented, with 2021 figures indicating that in the UK only 16.5% of engineers are women. As the only platform of its kind, it plays a vital role in encouraging more young women and girls to take up engineering careers.

When is International Women in Engineering Day Celebrated

International Women in Engineering Day is celebrated annually on 23 June. This date was chosen to mark the birthday of the renowned female engineer and mathematician, Ada Lovelace, who is considered the world’s first computer programmer. On this day, events and activities are organized to celebrate women in engineering and inspire young girls to pursue careers in STEM fields.

Why is International Women in Engineering Day Celebrated?

Celebrating International Women in Engineering Day is important to raise awareness about the challenges faced by women in the engineering profession and to promote gender equality in STEM fields. By highlighting the achievements of women engineers, we can inspire more girls to pursue careers in engineering and contribute to the advancement of technology and innovation.

How we Celebrate International Women in Engineering Day

On International Women in Engineering Day, organisations, universities, and engineering companies around the world host a variety of events and initiatives to celebrate the achievements of women in engineering. These may include panel discussions, workshops, networking events, mentorship programs, and outreach activities aimed at engaging and inspiring young girls to consider a career in engineering

“As we celebrate International Women in Engineering Day, we recognise the pivotal role women play in shaping a sustainable and innovative future. Our collective efforts and diverse perspectives are essential in tackling environmental challenges and driving progress in STEM fields. The Environment and Ecology team collaborates with our teams and clients on-site to ensure that the impact on the environment is minimised while facilitating project completion. Our goal is to leave the environment in an improved condition upon the conclusion of our work. May this day inspire and empower the next generation to apply their talents and ingenuity in the field of engineering.”

Akhila Theppala | Graduate Engineer

“As a Technical Manager, I lead the process engineering design phase of our projects – from initial site visits through feasibility, optioneering and into outline and detailed design.  Design engineering is central to everything I do, including providing support after the design phase to our construction and commissioning teams. Each day brings new challenges and opportunities across a range of projects that positively benefits the communities we serve. It’s an engaging, dynamic and fulfilling industry to work in, and I encourage anyone interested to explore the existing possibilities it offers.”
