Ami Crump

Position: Network Valve Technician

Ami studied Sports Science at college and university in Worcester. She loves being outdoors, and this is where her career in the water industry started. A friend recommended working for a contractor on the Severn Trent account, Ami was ready for a new opportunity and applied for the role of Network Valve Technician, here at Avove.

What does a Network Valve Technician do?

I am responsible for looking after the water network that Avove works on with Severn Trent. I attend site most days, and as my role is varied, no two days are the same. I operate and check the valves and hydrants, undertake water sampling, monitor air pressure, shut off mains so we are able to install new connections, survey stop taps, rezone the network and flushing, and carry out checks for pre-planned works – these are just a few of the areas I look after.

What do you like about working for Avove?

I enjoy the hands-on nature of the role. It is challenging and I’m learning something new every day. I work with a team of experienced colleagues and learn from their expertise – we work together to come up with efficient and effective solutions.

There are lots of opportunities to develop our skill set through learning and development, so I believe we can all achieve what we want if we put our minds to it and put the hard work in.

I’ve been a Network Technician for a year now. I am ambitious and keen to move up the ladder to become either a Site Manager or move into Health and Safety.

Do you have any advice for someone looking to work out on site?

I’d say: “Give it a go!” At first, it may feel overwhelming but with the right team by your side, guiding you, you will get the hang of how the network works. I love working with the team, and even people with lots of experience who have done this role for years come across new things. If you like a challenge – this is the role for you!

We all need to start somewhere, and this is a great place to start your career. As a colleague, our opinions are really listened to. I am proud to work for a company that encourages a new generation to get into the industry.

Water is one of the most important sources on the planet – so why not help to make sure thousands of people can access clean drinking water!
