Annika Overton-Hope

Position: Principal Commercial Manager

Annika completed her Masters in Physical Geography, where she specialised in water chemistry. Before starting her career, Annika took some time out and travelled around Australia. When she returned to the UK her career started out in a customer-facing role before moving into the utilities sector as an Assistant Quantity Surveyor. Annika enjoyed working in the industry and developed her skills quickly becoming a Principal Commercial Manager.

What does a Principal Commercial Manager do?

I manage the commercial team for both the Capital, Complex and HS2 Connections sides of the Severn Trent contract. We ensure compliance with Avove systems, processes and procedures across the contracts, working to tight deadlines.

I manage a team of 11 and we oversee all of the contractual side of the works, including issuing works orders, management of the contract, subcontractor relationships and the analysis and reconciliation of all costs associated with the projects.

What do you like about working for Avove?

We have a great team here at Avove. Now that we are an independent business, we have closer links with departments all over the organisation meaning you can usually find the person to help on any issue you may have.

I love working in this sector and being able to have an impact on the way we work and what Avove brings to the table for our clients – it’s fast-paced, ever-changing, challenging and  analytical.

Do you have any advice for someone looking to join Avove?

Working in the commercial team is really fun! It’s constant problem-solving, and we have great links with the finance and operations teams. We get out on-site to see some fantastic engineering and projects.

I would say “Just give it a go”. If you are looking to change career, apply for an Assistant Quantity Surveyor job, and don’t be put off by pre-requisite job requirements, you don’t always need a formal qualification to enter an industry.
